In a backlash to the government of Alejandro Garcia Padilla, Political Newcommer Ricky Roselló won the Governorship in a closer than expected against the then Secretary of State and former Secretary of Sports and Recreation David Bernier.
Due to mounting Scandals, and a need to focus on the burgeoning Puerto Rican Debt Crisis, the Incombent Alejandro Garcia Padilla opened the door for a new person to take the job.
Early on, the person likeliest was seen to be Pedro Pierluisi, however, due to a series of Gaffes, he ended up falling far behind, and making a miraculous near comeback due to the controvercial nature of Ricky Roselló's Political carreer.
On the PPD's side, David Bernier took up the poisoned chalise of the PPD Nomination, with him trailing for the entire campaign, his close loss was in and of itself surprising, especially due to the down ballot PNP wave that swepped the legislature.
This can be explained again due to the controvercial nature of Ricky Rosselló, as would later be exemplefied in Tellegramgate, he was seen as too young and inexperienced for the governorship, which combined with his assosiation to his controvercial father, and Bernier's liberalism, caused him to nearly lose a surefire win.
This election is also notable for Alexandra Lúgaro reaching double digits as an independent candidate, the first time a third party reached double digits in a governor's race since 1968, which was surprising during the campaign - as lugaro polled double digits - but not in the general as she won beneath her expected margin as People voted Bernier to Stop Ricky.
In the end however, the envoronment won out, giving Ricky a Term which he would not complete due to #Rickyleaks
On the RC Side, a similar dynamic took forth, where Jeniffer Gonzáles, due to her conservatism and assosiation with Fortuño, and a strong challenge by Hector Ferrer underperformed the fundamentals and won by 1.59%, underperforming Ricky's margin of 2.93%, and posting the second worst PNP Margin of the 2016 Elections(only beaten by the 0.9% Mayoral ballot PNP Margin), despite being the highest PNP Vote getter of the same elections.
But, due to an increasing support for statehood on the island, mixed with a general Pro PNP environment and hatred towards the administration of Alejandro García Padilla, allowed Jenniffer to squeek by and become the first female Resident Commissioner, and first inmediately GOP Caucusing Elected Resident Commissioner since the Socialist Santiago Iglesias in 1936 (and first Resident Comisioner to caucus with the GOP since Jorge L. Córdova
In terms of Mayoralties, due to Ricky's machine destroying multiple PNP Municipal Machines, the PPD Was able to hold many of the Mayoralties on the island and while they had a small net loss due to the environment in PNP Heartland Municipalities, they also gained the lean PNP Municipality of Vega Alta and Longtime PNP Strongholds of Morovis and Loíza.
In an example of how large the wave is, in the senate, the PPD Were reduced to 1 District seat and 3 Regular At Large Seat, necesitating the Minorities law to give them 3 Aditional seats due to the PNP Going 3 seats over the constitutional limit of 21 seats unless the Gov Nominee got more than 2/3rds of the vote, giving the PNP a veto Proof supermajority in the Senate.
A Similar thing happened for the house, with the PNP Nearly going above the 34 seat limit that would have given the PPD an aditional At Large seat in the house. In doing so, giving the PNP an aditional supermajority in the House of Representatives.
