Whilst Best known for dropping out of his 2002 Senate Reelection in September of that Year, Robert G. Torricelli got his start in elected office by defeating incumbent Republican Harold C. Hollenbeck in New Jersey's 9th congressional district in President Ronald Reagan's first midterm.
A culturally/foreign policy Liberal, AFL-CIO the three term Republican Incumbent lost due to Torricelli hammering him on his support for what conservative issues he did support in the 97th congress.
Those being Hollenbeck's support for Reaganomics, gun control, and his conservative environmental positions.
Further, the contours of the districrt helped Torricelli as they took in the most democratic areas of Bergen County, whilst keeping out republican areas - allowing for Torricelli to win by 7% in this '84 Reagan+17% District [(R) 54% - (D) 37% - (O) 9%] (1984 Almanac of American Politics)
Once in Congress, Torricelli took on a major roll on the Foreign affairs committee due to the fact that his constituent's interests spanned the world, from Israel, to Greece, to the Korean Penninsula (Mostly South Korea),
