The 1936 Presidential Election in the state of New Jersey, the largest Democratic win in the state of New Jersey until 1964 was a turning point in the state's electoral coalitions, and the true electoral begining of the Fifth party system.
Riding high on approval for the New Deal and his handling of the depression, Roosevelt's reelection—and win in a state he carried four years prior—was a guarantee from the get go, with the under the hood electoral changes being what is most deserving of discussion here.
Herein, Roosevelt's biggest gains were in the Quaker and longtime Republican Southern Jersey, winning for the first time since 1912 Nucky Johnson's Atlantic County, as well as winning Camden and western Southern Jersey (CD-01) by a strong 33.2%.
Similarly he held up well in the northeastern Urban areas and suburbs, carrying Mercer & Essex counties, by a comfortable marginm as well as winning Union, Bergen and Somerset counties—none of which he carried in 1932, and most of which he wouldn't again
Moreover he won Hudson county by a stagering 100K votes, a margin that came mostly from Frank Hague's own Jersey City where Roosevelt won the vote by 86, 303 votes or 60.5%
However, despite these improvements, Roosevelt did fall in one place—the non yankee German Northwest of the state. Here he failed to carry legacy Democratic Sussex county in 1932, and lost ground with the Germans who lived on there as they were weary of the multiethnic, New Deal Coalition
Partly as a result of this, and of the Longtime republican portion of Bergen County, the only congressional district Roosevelt would fail to carry was North Jersey's 7th Congressional district held by the future chairman of the House Committee on Un-American Activities J. Parnell Thomas
Of note, Roosevelt would also win the District of Fred A. Hartly Jr by 11.3%—the coauthor of the Taft-Hartly Act would win reelection in NJ-10 by 0.6%
In terms of Counties, Roosevelt would win 17/21 counties to Landon's 4/21 Counties, and in terms of congressional districts roosevelt would win 13/14 Congressional districts to Landon's 1/14 CDs
