The 1986 Hawaii Congressional elections, two contests which includedextremely prominent 1980s Hawaiian Politicians, CD-02 Congressman, Winner's Daniel Akaka and Pat Saiki would later face eachother in the competitive 1990 Hawaii Senate election upon the retirement of Sparl Matsunaga
However, in 1980, that senate matchup was not yet ordained. Here, the popular representative Daniel Akaka won a smashing 54% victory over sacrificial lamb Maria Hustace.
Despite this, the 1st district is where the intrigue was this election, with congressman Cecil Heftel resigning to focus on his gubernatorial bid, a special election and powerful open seat was opened up in Hawaiian Politics.
Here, three people ran, state senator, elected congressman and future governor Neil Abercrombie, Governor Ariyoshi Aide Mufi Hannemann, and Pat Saiki—a republican unconnected to any of Hawaii's political machines.
Despite Abercrombie's win in the special, during the primary he was unseated by Hannemann, who utilized her machine connections and used a dubious Marijuana usage claim against Abercrombie to win. This rift opened a path for the Republican Saiki to win—who in turn took the seat and held it until she retired in 1990.
