The 2012 Senate election in NJ, the largest win for a Democrat since Jim Florio's election to the Governorship in 1989 one term incumbent Bob Menendez (D-Hudson) beat 13th District State Senator Joe Kyrillos Jr (R-Monmouth) with Superstorm sandy boosting his margin.
After running the DCCC in 2010, and being given credit for stemming the tide of the red wave and holding the Senate, Menendez chose to focus on his own reelection in 2012.
Said Reelection was never considered in doubt, but after Chris Christie won in 2009, and a recall attempt in 2010 by the Tea Party (Which was ruled unconstitutional) Menendez wasn't taking any chances.
To this effect, some republicans tried to unseet him, with the NJ GOP recruiting close Christie ally, Monmouth Senator Joe Kyrillos, whom in an attempt to win closely tied himself to Christie.
However Menendez's Incumbency, fundraising prowess (He raised $17 million to Kyrillos' $4.5 Million), and boost from sandy despite Kyrillos' connection to Governor Christie made unseating the Hudson County Senator an imposible task, resulting in Kyrillos' 19.5% loss.
In his win, Menendez won 14/21 Counties to Kyrillos's 7/21, 28/40 State legislative Districts to Kyrillos' 12/40 LDs, and 9/12 Congressional Districts to Kyrillos' 3/12 CDs
