With the election being decided by 49 Votes, the 1988 Mayoral election was both the Closest Election San Juan has expereienced, and one that ended 20 straight years of PNP rule of the Alcaldia of San Juan.
Lawyer and then Secretary of State Héctor Luis Acevedo(PPD-D), defeated then PNP House Minority Leader and former Speaker Pro-Tempore of the Puerto Rico House José Granados Navedo (PNP-D) for the mayoralty of "La Ciudad Capital" (the Capital City) of Puerto Rico
In doing so, begining the Era of Competitive San Juan elections, wherein neither the PNP nor the PPD have been able to establish full dominance in the city as it had existed between 1968 and 1988 with the PNP and from 1948-1968 for the PPD, began in earnest.
Hector Luis won mainly thanks to his showing in San Juan Pecinto 5 canceling out the PNP's historical advantage in San Juan Pecinto 1, and then getting over the finish line thanks to Precintos 2, 3, and 104 netting him votes over the PNP's advantage in Precinto 4 - eventually giving Héctor Luis the smallest victory in San Juan History
The PPD would End up holding on to the Alcaldia for 12 Years untill they lost it to Jorge Santini(PNP-R) in 2000
Interestingly, the 1988 Election also technically ended ~18 Years of Republican rule of La ciudad Capital. This is because Carlos Romero Barceló can technically be considered a Republican during his mayoralty of San Juan (1), and His Successor, Dr. Hernán Padilla was one of the main leaders of The Republican Party during the 1980s.
Furthermore, due to both Héctor Luis Acevedo(3), and José Granados Navedo being Democrats(2), regardless of who won in this election, whether or not the PNP's streak continued, the GOP was poised to lose control of San Juan
