Hoffman, a who's mayoral victory was aided by A Mr. William M. "Boss" Tweed later became governor in 1868, With Manhattan and specifically Tweed's support being crucial in his narrow 3.28% Statewide Win
Hoffman would retire after winning a second term as governor in 1870 because his association with Tweed, despite him never being implicated in Tweed's crimes, was so politically toxic as to being the end of his political career
