With Bob Menendez loosing the Hudson County Line for his 2024 Reelection bid, effectively Dooming him, time to take a look at his start in legislative politics.
The 1987 NJ-LD-33 Assembly election was a Contest between (R) José Arango, the First Cuban American Legislator in NJ History, Angelo Valente, a former Hoboken Council Man (D) Bob Menendez, the Popular Cuban-American Mayor of Union City, and Hoboken Lawyer Bernard Kenny.
This Contest resulted in Dems picking up a delegation (2 Assembly Seats) which the 1985 Kean wave swept the GOP into.
A big focus on this election was the Hispanic vote, with the GOP heavilly targeting it to try and hold on, utilizing ad spots with Governor Kean and President Ronald Reagan to try and hold on to do so.
However, this did not work, with the Democratic slate winning not just the district, as they had in every non presidential election since 1973 (save for 1985. While also winning it's predesesor since 1967, when NJ stopped using counties), but the district's Hispanic vote as well.
After the Election Menendez would say that despite Cuban Americans still blaming Dems for the failure at the Bay of Pigs, there was a new Generation coming up in Hudson County that didn't hold the resentment, allowing Dems to make inroads into the traditionally GOP demographic.
