The 2018 NY LG Primary in New York City, a 7.3% win for self styled Progressive activist Jumaane Williams in a race he otherwise lost by 6.9% against then Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul was one that occured amidst a campaign that centered around LG Hochul's Loyalty to Governor Cuomo.
Campaining on challenging the governor if he disagreed with him and challenging Hochul on her Loyalty Williams put up a stiff challenge to Hochul, admist a progressive Wave in 2018.
By contrast Hochul highlighted her work on issues such as Payed family leave, banning child marriage, and adressing sexual Assault on college Campuses
Despite her connection to Mr. Cuomo she underperformed his 31.13% Margin in the primary by 24%, mostly due to her losing NYC by 7.33% whilst Cuomo won it by 32.6%—overperforming compared to him upstate.
In NYC, Jumaane Williams built upon the traditional Progressive Coalition by winning over African American Voters throughout the city—Winning them in Manhattan and Kings, whilst holding Hochul to a draw in Queens and Richmond, and only losing them in the Bronx.
In addition to this, Williams also did well with progressive in the Gentrifying Areas of queens and Brooklyn as well as the West side and Lower Manhattan—here, he also cut into Hochuls margins on the uper east side, losing it while winning some precincts.
