The 2004 NC Gubernatorial election, a contest between Incumbent Governor Mike Easley and State Senator Pat Ballantine resulted in a doubling of the Governor's 2000 Margin—winning the state that Bush won by 12.4% that same night by 12.7%
In the Campaign, the Republican Ballantine tried to beat Easley by calling him a "Tax and Spender" who blamed everyone but himself for the state's ills in addition to coming in favor of a pay raise for teachers and literacy programs
To these attacks Easly said that "If Patrick Ballantine isachampion of education, then Saddam Hussein is a champion of civil rights” and moreover ran on his tenure seeing no cuts to state services as other states had done.
Easly further campaigned on his support for Gun Rights—touting his support by the NRA— opposition to Gay Marriage, and avoided the Democratic National Convention all in an attempt to not seem too liberal for the state.
and in the end, this worked, winning 44% of Whites and 87% of African Americans Easley Trounced Ballantine by the an aformentioned 12.7% margin.
