The 2013 Chicago Mayoral Election, A contest between former White House Chief of Staff & North Side Congressman Rahm Emanuel, Daley Chief of Staffy Gery Chico, and an assortment of other candidates resulted in the election of the former North Side Congressman.
Upon the surprise Retirement of longtime mayor Richard M. Daley, son of the imfamous mayor and machine boss Richard J. Daley—Emanuel and all other candidates jumped into the first open Chicago mayoral election in 64 years
Here, Emanuel—with his national connections—was able to outspend all his opponents, allowing him to avoid a runoff that was seen as an opponent's best way to Stop the former congressman from becoming mayor.
Despite the perceived inevetability, Emanuel's opponents questioned wether he was a resident of Chicago and if he were eligible to run, with the SCOIL siding with Emanuel declaring he never lost his residency in the north side.
However, opponents still pressed the issue on the campaign trail, but in the end, Emanuel was elected to a city with a declining population, an exploding deficit, a Pension crisis, and no easy revenue sources to try and fix Chicago's financial woes.
