The 2022 GOP Primary for NJ-07, after holding the incumbent Tom Malinowski to a close race in 2020, Kean inmediately sought a 2022 rematch with the congressman. However, despite his impressive performance in 2020 Kean drew republican Challengers due to his moderation in his time in the NJ Legislature.
Kean vs Individual Candidates
Kean vs All candidates put together
Despite his challengers being significantly underfunded, and Kean having all the county ballot lines in the districts Kean felt the need to pivot to the right to secure his place in the primary and lock down the GOP base.
While this attempt to lock down the primary was successfull, Kean only took a pitiful 45% of the primary voteshare in a divided field, performing best in Morris, Union, and the parts of Somerset county he represented in the State Senate
In the end, this pivot to the right cost Kean in the general, and in a seat that was made substancially redder than the one he nearly beat the now scandal plagued Malinowski in, Kean only won by 2% in a year that was overall 6% redder than 2020.
