Whilst the IDC had survived for a few cycles, the election of Donald Trump had festered into a Democratic anger towards politicians who allied with Republicans. To this effect, the IDC faced the full force of the backlash, being called Trump Democrats and attacked for caucusing with republicans.
These attacks created an opening for Alessandra Biaggi, who in addition to the standard IDC attacks used by the progressive Working Families Party Challengers (of which Biaggi was one) used the present sexual harassment, and campaign finance violation allegations against Klein.

This came despite Klein Spending 2 Million to hold his seat against Biaggi, touting his endorsement from Governor Cuomo in an attempt to hold his seat.
However, Klein's attempt was futile, as his connection to leading the IDC was too much for him to overcome—and with voters holding that against him he lost to Allesandra Biaggi.
