The 2018 NY-14th Democratic Primary, a Political earthquake occuring in a unstable poltical era, Newcomer Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (AOC) ousted No. 4 House Democrat, and potential Speaker Joe Crowley in a major upset.
Campaining as a staunch progressive, Ocasio-Cortez made issue of the fact that Crowley didn't funcionally live in and was out of touch with the district, noting that the White congressman representing a majority Latino seat sent his kids to a school in DC rather than the district
Crowley by contrast, speant heavilly in the final weeks enphasing his opposition to President Trump as a way to atempt to bolster his support against the stiff challenge presented by Ms. Ocasio-Cortez.
But he made major misteps, one such mistep was sending a Latina surrogate to the final debate against Ocasio-Cortez, and in doing so, playing into the now-Congresswoman's strengths—the internet—and Crowley's weekness—his absenteeism
In fact, Ocasio-Cortez—a Bernie 2016 organizer—funcionally got her political start thanks to the internet. Specifically a viral video that outlined her campaign as a change Democrats were seeking against aging out of touch politicians who had been in Washington for too long.
Another major mistep was not focusing on his primary until six weeks before, ceeding to Ocasio-Cortez crucial time to build up her name recognition and campaign operation as neither he nor the media saw her as a serious threat.
In this sense, the internet, Crowley's longstanding absenteeism and misteps propelled AOC to oust Crowley—which in addition to Crowley's career, also ended multiple challenges to the reascension of Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the Speakership after the 2018 midterms.
