While in 2016 Trump Routed Hillary Clinton in once blue west Virginia, Democrats retained two offices in November, Jim Justice in the Governorship and longtime Treasurer John Perdue
Here, whilst Political newcomer Anne Urling touted her thirty years of financial experience, Purdue's incumbency and enphasis of his 43 years in public service won out in the minds of West Virginia voters
This would be the last time a Democrat would be elected to the treasurer's office, as despite not electing a Republican to the office since 1928, come 2020 Riley Moore would defeat Purdue.
A Similar story occured in the Governatorial election, as West Virginia Senator and Democratic leader Joe Manchin recruited Businessman Jim Justice to Run
An office that held close contests since Manchin won reelection in 2008, Jim Justice—a Republican before being recruited by Manchin—would go on to switch parties in 2017, claiming he could help the state more as a republican.
Comparing both elections, we find that John Purdue did better in most of the state, such as most of the North, the Panhandle, and the southernmost coulcountry of the state.
Whilst by contrast, Justice did better in counties such as the Kanawha (Charleston), Wyoming, Greenbrier and Cabell (Huntington)—In doing so, this allowed Justice to perform 0.2% better than Purdue in the election.
