2017 Dem Primary
The 2017 NJ Gov Dem Primary, a contest between Frm Ambassador to Germany Phil Murphy, Frm Undersecretary of the Treasury for Enforcement Jim Johnson, Frm NJ Dem Party Chair, & Assemblyman John Wisniewski, among others, resulted in the nomination of the Former Goldman Sachs exec
Murphy, also a former Ambassador to Germany and Financier and former Finance chair for the Democratic National Committee under Howard Dean, got the nomination thanks to multiple well placed donations to the county parties, in the process locking up their endorsements and New Jersey's infamous county lines. In the process this forced the early frontrunners for the Governorship, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop and then Senate President Steve Sweeney, to run for reelection and explicitly or implicitly support Murphy.
However, despite and because of the lines Phil Murphy only got 48.37% with a divided field, coasting through the primary and basically ignoring his competition.
Murphy's coalition in the primary, as can be seen above in the areas he got a majority, was dominantly in the Urban machine dominated areas of Hudson, Essex, Passaic, Atlantic, Union, Camden counties as well as the Norcross Machine's heartland of Gloucester County

Likewise, Johnson - who was endorsed by Hakeem Jeffries and former NYC mayor David Dinkins - also had some support in NJ's urban municipalities, but was much more popular in its liberal suburbs - as can be seen in his win in Montclair and The Township of South Orange Village.
By contrast, Assemblyman Wisniewski, a former Bernie Sanders 2016 endorser won everywhere else, mostly based on being the moderate protest vote candidate compared to Johnson as well as working class appeal.
