The 2018 South Dakota Gubernatorial Election, a contest between then U.S. House Rep Kristi Noem, and Senate Minority Leader Billie Sutton was an expectedly close one that resulted in Noem's ascention to the SD Governors Office, in doing so becoming the first female governor of South Dakota.
Sutton was able to get close due to his phenominal margins in the Reservations, in addition to holding the east of the state extremely close thanks to his strength in the rurals and outright winning the northeast and Sioux falls.
However, due to being unable to win the Sioux Falls suburbs outright, failing to bring the rapid city suburbs close, and/or winning more of the east of the state (in addition to his already inpressive showing) Sutton was unable to best the perpetual underperformer Kristi Noem.
This was the closest Gubernatorial race in South Dakota since 1986, and continued it's now 48 Year streak of not electing a democratic Governor since 1974 when Richard Kneip was reelected.
