The 1986 Ohio Senate Election, A contest between former Astronaut & Incumbent John Glenn and Representative Tom Kindness turned back a smashing victory for John Glenn in his Penultimate reelection campaign.
Not widely seen as competitive throughout the campaign, Glenn campaigned as a popular moderate to liberal incumbent against Kindness, a clear conservative who sought to turn the election into a referendum on both Democratic Liberalism and Republican conservatism.
To this effect Kindness further campaigned against the popular incumbent by highlighting that a bipartisan commission brought him to court for Campaign Finance issues, in addition to the Senator's 1984 Presidential campaign debt and lackluster constituent services.
However, Glenn, Known as a moderate liberal and as a wholesom kindhearted soul, campaigned on his records, lambasting Kindness' attacks as demeaning to democracy, cheapening to politics, and an insult to Ohioan's inteligence.
As a result, in his 25% win over Kindness, Glenn called his win a repudiation of Negative campaigning wholesale
