The 2016 Resident Commissioner's race of Puerto Rico. Held to determine the territory's sole non voting delegate in congress. This Race was held concurrently with all other elections in Puerto Rico which take place on November of every leap year like presidential elections.
Most people use this result(and the subsequent one in 2020)to postulate that both the winner Jenniffer Gonzáles is an electoral juggernaught and that PR would be a swing state.
However, this does not tell the full story as-while JGo is a Republican, she was elected as a PNP, on the island political scale. She was also elected alongside Registered Democrat Ricardo Rosselló in 2016, and The Former Democratic Representative Pedro Pierluisi in 2020.
Furthermore 2016 was considered a wave election against the PPD due to the unpopularity of the Alejandro Garcia Padilla administration elected in 2012. And despite that Wave JGo nearly lost her race showcasing that she is not an electoral powerhouse.
And while some people point to her 2020 landslide. She won against the one of the most unpopular politicians in Puerto Rico. Indicted former Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vila, whom once chosen as the nominee, everyone knew would lose in a landslide
A good comparison to a U.S. Politician for Vila would be Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich(D-IL)
