The 1989 NJ Gubernatorial election, the last time any Democrat got more than 60% of the Vote in a New Jersey election, saw the election of 1981 Gubernatorial runner up, Democratic South Jersey Congressman Jim Florio over 12th district Republican Representative Jim Courter.
A Strong Conservative, Courtner opened the door for Florio to campaign as a moderate; promising to maintain the economic growth seen under the incumbent Tom Kean whom Florio had lost too in 1981, whilst also maintaining a socially liberal agenda such as with regards to abortion.
In the end, Florio won in a landslide, with Florio's base in South Jersey alongside the democratic Strongholds of Essex, Mercer, and Hudson Counties propelling him to victory, padded by powerful wins in Bergen, Passaic, Ocean, Monmouth Middlesex and Union Counties.
In his victory , Florio won 17/21 Counties, all Congressional Districts and 36/40 State legislative districts as compared to Courtner's 4/21 counties zero Congressional Districts and 4/40 State Legislative districts.
