Due to the coming Saturday Intra-PNP Special election to replace Guaynabo Mayor/President of the Federation of Mayors(PNP) Ángel Pérez who resigned in disgrace on 12/11/21 due to a pay for play corruption Scandal, I thought it fit to map the last time that Guaynabo had an open mayoral election, the 2017 PNP special.
Between Frm Representative & eventual winner Ángel Pérez and then/Current Bayamón Sen Carmelo Ríos, this election ended up being a landslide for Pérez, dominating everywhere - especially in the College educated northern Guaynabo, and more generally the College educated unidades.
Interestingly, both candidates represented northern Guaynabo in their various chambers-with Ríos both being on the ballot more recently than Pérez and Perez being ousted in a dubious primary in 2012, making it interesting that they backed Pérez by 7.2% more than southern Guaynabo
More on this: Ríos' loss can mainly be atributed to the fact that he was open about being a continuation of the administration of the longtime Mayor, Héctor O'Neill, who resigned in disgrace setting up this election.
By Contrast, Pérez was seen as an outsider, & non corrupt breath of fresh air, & long time enemy of the O'Neal Machine (O'Neal ousted him from PR-6 due to not being a loyalist).
Because of this perception of a new leaf: Pérez got tons of institutional support from both outside the O'Neal Machine & outside the PNP, with even then PPD San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz - longtime soberanista - endorsing Pérez.
However, O'Neal's son is running for his father's seat, so the family may be in stock for a return to power after just 4 years out of the seat since 1993.
