Safer Internet Day was on Tuesday 20th February 2026. We talked about what we use the internet for. We then read the story of Roo's New Friend. Her new friend was a Voice Assistant, like an Alexa. We discussed Roo's story, and talked about our own experiences with Voice Assistant devices. We then talked about good use and bad use of the devices.
Children's Mental Health Week's theme was This is My Place. We discussed what mental health is, and how to look after our mental health. We talked about who can help us if we need help. We then drew an Island that represented 'My Place' and drew pictures of places and things that are important to us and make us happy.
Eisteddfod
Wear Red for Velindra
World Book Day
Red Nose Day
Mother's Day
We talked about different times when we use instructions, and what instructions mean and look like. We looked at different examples of instructions and played games where we had to follow the instructions. We talked about how instructions had to have a 'bossy word' that told you what to do. We then followed instructions to make a rain catcher. First we identified the bossy words in the instructions.
Then we followed the instructions to make our rain catchers, and put them outside to collect rain. We ordered photographs of each instruction and then wrote our own instructions, making sure we included the bossy words!
A water tray appeared in our classroom with a letter from the penguin from the story Lost and Found, asking us to help him fix his boat by testing materials to see which would best to use. Miss Horrigan hadn’t put the water tray so where did it come from?
We decided it had to have come from the penguin and the boy, so we made posters asking ‘have you seen this boy and penguin?’ We went on a hunt around the school looking for signs that the boy and penguin had been in our school. We asked teachers and other children if they had seen anything. We found a watery footprint, and red and white wool that could have come from the boys jumper!
After our investigation and discovering some clues that the boy and penguin had been in our school, Mr Hughes checked the security cameras. Mrs Scott brought us a print out of a screen capture showing the boy and penguin in our classroom!
We then received another letter from the Boy this time, asking us to find out information about penguins, so that he could take care of the penguin. To do this we talked about the difference between fact and fiction, and then did some research to find out some facts about penguins. We then made some posters about penguins that we left out for the boy to take!
During Dosbarth Pinc's visit from Ddraig Cwmlai we played games practising the sentence patterns Ble mae? and Beth wyt ti'n gwisgo?
We explored 3d shapes by going on a 3d shape hunt around the school, explored shapes and discussed the different properties, built with 3d shapes, and then sorted 3d shapes.
We drew around the faces of 3d shapes to identify the 2d shapes, we sorted 2d shapes, identified 2d shapes in photographs, made 2d shapes out of lollipop sticks and straws, and went on a 2d shape hunt around the classroom.
Rain Catchers
We made rain catchers, using rulers to mark out the centimetres along the bottle.
After a week we collected the rain catchers and measured how much water we had collected.
Length and Height
We ordered different lengths of string by size, we measured the height and length of snowmen and penguins with cubes, we measured the length of strips of tape with cubes and identified which was the longest and which was the shortest, we found things around the classroom that were taller and shorter than us, and we used different lengths of string to find things in our classroom that were longer than and shorter than it.
We then explored measure using standard units of measure using a ruler and measuring in centimetres.
We partitioned numbers into tens and ones using blocks. It was a great practical and visual way to help us understand 2 digit numbers.
After keeping a tally chart of the weather for 2 weeks we talked about what the temperature is like for different types of weather, whether it would be hot or cold, and how we would know. We split into 2 groups and had a competition to see who could dress someone for the weather the quickest.
Hot and Sunny
Cold and Wet
To show our understanding of the numbers 0-5 we sang lots of rhymes, ready stories and played games identifying numbers, the different representations and ordering the numbers. We also identified number bonds to 5 using counters and a 5 frame.
Our natural world is diverse and dynamic, influenced by processes and human actions.
We went for a winter walk around our school, looking for signs of winter. We found lots of ice, the pond was frozen and there were no leaves on the trees! When we got back to our playground we discovered a huge puddle of water, a hat, scarf, some twigs, a carrot and some conkers. It must have been a snowman that melted!
After our winter walk, when we noticed that there were no leaves on the trees, we talked about the different seasons, and what the differences are in the weather and the environment in the different seasons.
We carried out an experiment with ice. We started by holding an ice cube and talking about where ice comes from and how it is made. The ice cube was freezing!
We then carried out an experiment to see where ice would melt the fastest - in the fridge, by the radiator or outside. We placed a bag of ice in each location and then made our predictions.
After 2 hours we checked each bag of ice and compared them to see which one had melted the fastest. We then wrote our results!
After completing a weather chart for a week we noticed that it had rained a lot! We followed instructions to make a rain catcher that we put in different parts of the school to see how much rain we could catch.
We left the rain catchers outside for a week. We made predictions about which rain catcher would collect the most rain. We then collected them and measured how much rain each one had collected and recorded our results.
Following the penguin and boy's letters asking for our help to fix their broken boat, we investigated different materials to see which one would make the best boat. It was important to know if it floated or sank, so we tested as many different materials as we could find.
We were making boats using different materials. We made them out of Lego and tested them to see if they floated. We also made a giant boat out of wooden blocks. Jack even thought to add some oars!
We finished our topic by holding a collaborative boat making session with Mrs Barnett's class (Year 4/5), who had also been investigating floating and sinking. We met in the hall and teamed up. We had a selection of recyclable materials and our challenge was to make a boat that would support the penguin. There was lots of discussion, team work and fun to be had!
Wind Streamers
Investigating the weather led us to making wind streamers. We learnt how to tie a knot so we could tie a ribbon to a stick and use it to see which way the wind was blowing.
Bird Feeders
We made two different types of bird feeders...
Bird Biscuits using wooden discs, mud and bird seed. We enjoyed hanging these in our oak tree area.
Pine Cone Feeders using pine cones, lard and bird seed. These ones we took home to hang in our gardens!
Every week Missy comes to teach us basketball skills. We are getting better each week and love learning new skills!
Using the book The Lights That Dance in the Night as inspiration we created our own pictures of the Northern Lights.
We have been learning some Welsh Folk Dances in our PE sessions. Dosbarth Pinc learned Cylch y Cymru.
