During the spring term, we have read 'Skellig' and 'The Final Year'. The two books are closely related as they and reference each other, and the characters are challenged by their local environment.
Persuasive Writing
In 1865, life was tough in Wales. Crops were not growing well due to excessive rain, mining was tough and the people of Wales were not doing well.
Along came Michael D Jones from Merioneth, who decided to preach of the benefits of sharing our Welsh culture with others. He decided that Patagonia would be the ideal location, with it's favorable climate.
We decided to write speeches using persuasive writing and to present on Chatterpix.
.. interestingly, although Michael D Jones was persuasive, he wasn't one of the Welsh settlers and only visited Patagonia twenty years after the Mimosa set sail.
We experimented with pencils..
..to create sketches of The Mimosa..
..as it set off from Liverpool..
.. on it's treacherous journey to Patagonia.
At first the Welsh settlers were very disappointed by the infertile land and their inability to harvest any crops, especially as Michael D Jones had been so persuasive about it being such a wonderful place.
Just as the settlers were losing heart, Rachel Jenkins told the other settlers about her ideas on irrigation of the River Chubut. She said that the land could be very fertile if only the river could flow into the fields.
Her ideas were met with some opposition at first, but she was very persuasive.
We made speeches and performed them on Chatterpix
The Welsh stayed in Patagonia and were able to share their culture.

Adobe Express - St Davids Day
To celebrate St. David's Day, we used Adobe Express to create an animation which tells the story of the 'Miracle at Llanddewi Brefi'.
Scratch
During our coding lessons, we created a maze game with a Patagonia theme. The aim of the game was to safely navigate the Mimosa from Liverpool to Patagonia, avoiding hazards along the way.

Google Doodles
Have you ever noticed that on March 1st, the Google logo changes??? This is something we noticed. We found out that at certain times & celebrations throughout the year, Google replace their traditional logo with a themed logo. These are called 'Google Doodles'. To celebrate St Davids's Day, we had a go at designing our very own St Davids day-themed Google Doodle. Check out some of our designs below.

The History of the Welsh Language
We desided to investigate the growth and decline of the Welsh language. We researched figures from the Census between 1921 and 2021. The findings were interesting. We found out that in 1941 there were no Census figures. We deduced that the reason for this was World War 2. We saw a decline in the Welsh language after the introduction of the Welsh Not in schools. We also saw a big incline in 2001 and a growth in recent years.
The last of the Welsh whose only language was Welsh was in 1981.
