Summer 1 - Fit For Fun
Eatwell Guide
We explored the Eatwell Guide to find out about the different food groups and how to eat a balanced diet. We discussed which foods we should eat lots of and which foods we should eat a little of. Using sorted the food into the different food groups, and then drew our own version of the Eatwell Guide.Â
Using what we had found out we then designed a healthy menu. We needed to include breakfast, lunch, dinner and a drink.Â
Who is in my family?
We listened to the story The Family Book by Todd Parr and discussed how everybody's family is different. We thought about who is in our family, not who lives in our house, and drew a picture of the people most important to us.Â
HomesÂ
What is a home? Everyone has different types of homes, we discussed how a home can make us feel happy and secure. This led us onto discussing that animals also have homes too. During a nature walk we saw many birds but we were worried that they didn;t have a home so we decided that it would be a great idea to work in teams and create a nest for them to live in.Â
Surrealism Art
We explored the concept of Surrealism art and looked at how we could create a picture of a person's face out of fruit and vegetables.Â
We then took our art outside and used things we found in the nature area to create our faces out of natural materials.
Nature Art-Animals
To conclude our work on surrealism we decided that we would love to make animal faces out of natural materials. We worked in groups to explore the nature area and collect natural materials to create an animal.Â
Keeping Clean
We discussed how we keep our bodies clean. We then created posters showing what we thought were the most important things we need to do to keep clean. We then used that information to work in pairs and create a Google Slides to share with the children in Year 1.
Safe Medicines
We talked about what is medicine and how to stay safe around medicine. We sorted different items into 3 categories:
things we put inside our bodies
things we put inside our bodies with adult supervision
things we do not put inside our bodies
We read different scenario cards about medicines, and discussed what we would do and why...
We then decided as a class what were the most important messages and created a safety video to share with the nursery and reception children about how to be safe around medicine.
How do we change over time?
We looked at photos of us as a baby. Our first challenge was to guess who was who! We then talked about what a baby can do that a child cannot do. We thought about what we can do that a baby cannot do. We then put our photographs through an AI age enhancer to see what we might look like as an adult! We though the pictures were hilarious! Everyone thought that Dylan looked like Santa, and Adhiti thought she looked like her Grandma! We talked about what an adult can do that a child cannot and listed our ideas.Â
NSPCC Pantosuarus
After that we watched the NSPCC video of Pantosaurus and discussed the importance of respecting others privacy. We talked about safe and trusted adults who can help us.Â
Our Bodies
After much discussion about our body parts, we were set a challenge to guess where in our bodies we thought different organs were. We worked in groups to draw the organs onto an outline of a body. Then we compared our guesses to where they actually are in our body. We had great fun!Â
Woodland Olympics
We worked together to create an obstacle course down the nature area. We used logs and natural materials. Once completed we tested it out. We discussed the effects that exercise has on our bodies e.g. it made our heart rate increase, we got a little sweaty and we could feel our pulse.Â
Sports Day 2025
We finished off our topic by celebrating sports day with our families. We had great fun challenging our friends in the races, and thought it was great when the mums and dads joined in with a race of their own!
Summer 2 - Could Dinosaurs Live Today?
Wow! Egg shells!Â
We had a massive suprise when Miss Povey found egg shells in the nature area, of course we needed to go and investigate! Where did they come from? What animal could have hatched out of the egg?Â
Predictions
We researched what animals hatched out of eggs. We made predictions, remembering to back our predictions up with reasons.Â
What animals hatch out of eggs?
We use the Chromebooks and researched which animals hatch out of eggs to try and identify what could have been in the nature area.
Clues!
The next afternoon we walked back into class after lunch and to our suprise we found an envelope on the table addressed to us! It gave us instructions, we needed to read the clues and work out what animal hatched out of the egg. We couldn't believe it, it was a....dinosaur!Â
What do we know about Dinosaurs?
Mrs Scobie didn't know anything about dinosaurs so we needed to teach her a little bit about them. We worked in small groups to create a graffiti wall showing everything we already knew about Dinosaurs!Â
Missing
We received a letter off Harry! A dinosaur was missing and he needed our help to find him. We decided to make missing posters to see if anyone had seen him. In our posters we included a picture of the dinsoaur and a description of it. We remembered to use our adjectives and describe with our senses.Â
SkeletonsÂ
Did you know that our body and a dinosaurs body is made up of a skeleton? We studied photographs of dinsosaur skeletons and compared them to the human skeleton. We used paper straws to create a skeleton of a dinosaur.Â
What do dinosaurs eat?
We found out that there are different types of dinosaurs; herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We researched what dinosaurs ate and sorted them into categories. We used our researched to create food chains of a dinosaur.Â
How do we know about dinosaurs if they are extinct?
We learnt a big word - palaeontology, which is the study of life on Earth through fossils. We explored what fossils are and how they are formed. We were lucky enough to hold some real fossils!
We created our own fossils. We used playdough as the mould. Once we had taken an imprint of our fossil we poured in plaster of paris to make the fossil.
Habitats
We watched this video to find out about what a habitat is, and what it needs to have.
This led to a lot of discussion among the children about the different habitats, and which animals lived in them. Next we are going to find out about a dinosaurs habitat...
We received a challenge from Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs! Each group had a different dinosaur and we had to design a habitat for our dinosaur, making sure we included everything that they need. Once we designed our habitats we had to create the habitat.
We used materials that we found in the nature area to create our habitats.
We had an added challenge - to make our habitats move! After exploring axles and wheels, and how they work we added them to our habitats, and then took them outside to test them.Â
We then made videos about our habitats, explaining how we completed our challenge.
What do we think they looked like?
We used our imagination to picture what we thought the dinosaurs would look like in their natural habitats. We oil pastels to create our artwork.Â
Could Dinosaurs Live Today?
To end our topic we had a debate - could dinosaurs live today? In groups we discussed reasons for and against the argument.
We then created posters giving our reasons for / against ready for our debate.
We then went outside to take part in a debate and demonstration! The children were very passionate about their reasons and at the end even managed to convince some children to change their opinions and swap sides!
