After discovering our big question, we collected ideas as a class about what we would like to learn during this topic.
We had lots of questions about this topic! We are so excited to learn a lot more about Earth and Space!
We watched the original footage of the 1969 moon landings. This inspired thought and sparked many questions and areas of enquiry..
Dosbarth Efydd began on planet Earth! After locating Earth and finding that it was the third planet from the sun, we decided to find out what the Eath was made of. We found that the Earth was made of different layers and we decided to show the layers in a painted, labelled picture.
The children found the position of the Earth in relation to the other planets.
They learnt the names of the layers and labelle them.
They demonstrated their knowledge using paints and labels.
The children were fascinated by the moon. We explored the phases of the moon. The children kept watch on the moon each night. We showed the different phases of the moon with Oreos... which were tasted afterwards!
Next Dosbarth Efydd became fascinated by the natural disasters which have happened throughout History and continue to happen today. A big focus were volcanoes, especially after out Literacy focus and text Escape from Pompeii. We exprimented with chemical reactions , we designed, built, painted the volcanoes in groups and then enjoyed watching them 'erupt'.
We even attempted to make our own launch pads too!
We used teamwork skills to fix the continents and oceans map that had been cut into lots of pieces! We communicated as a group to solve the puzzle.
After solving the puzzle, we were able to label a map of the Earth; correctly identifying the continents and oceans.
We were really intrigued to learn about the countries of the world.
In pairs, we used Chromebooks to research the countries including information about the population, capital cities and the native language.
We love that the Welsh flag has a dragon!
We used black sugar paper and pastels to create beautiful art pieces of the Solar System! We loved blending the colours together and how bright they looked on the paper!
We painted some lovely paintings of space and then took a picture and added to make a class of astronauts.
Our Space landscapes including us as astronauts.
We painted the planets too!
Wwe designed our own Mars Rovers!
We did some planets exploring with chalks.
We found out that it's really important for astronauts to have a healthy lifestyle; especially during their training.
We thought about our own lifestyles and created research posters highlighting the importance of being healthy. This included diet and exercise!
We designed and made a healthy snack for an astronaut. We decided fruit kebabs were great for astronauts; especially if they wanted to try lots of different fruit!
We LOVED tasting new fruits including:
Strawberries
Watermelon
Kiwi
Oranges
Apples
Bananas
Mango
Dosbarth Efydd also loved their healthy fruit snacks and the members of School Council also did some food tasting for our new healthy Tuck shop, Cwmlai Healthy Fruity Delights.
Tasty snacks.
The children tried fruit, some that they had never tried before.
The fruit kebab was a favourite.
The School Council created a list of things to sell at the Tuck Shop, with prices.
