A workshop with Animal Encounters
We participated in a workshop with Animal Encounters. We met several animals; skunk, armadillo, lizard, snake and a meerkat. We found out information about the animal, their diet and their habitat. What an exciting start to our topic.
What do we know/ What would we like to find out?
We began our topic by discussing what facts we already know about Zoos. We thought carefully about what we would like to find out during our topic.
Habitats
After our workshop with Animal Encounters we decided to research different habitats. We investigated the following habitats:
polar
ocean
rainforest
woodland
urban
desert
We found out what living things lived in the habitats.
Mini Beast Hunt
We explored the nature area and participated in a mini beast hunt. We found many minibeasts living in their habitats. We used a tally chart to gather information and created bar charts to show the number of mini beasts that we found.
Bug Hotels
Following our minibeast hunt we used natural materials to create bug hotels in our nature area. By the time we had finished there were already several bugs moving in!
Pet Visits
Throughout the course of the topic we have been lucky to have a number of pets visit us. Each visit we talked about the animals and how to care for them. We met a chameleon, chicks, guinea pigs, a rabbit and a dog.
Animal Patterns
We have been exploring patterns on animal different animal skins. We drew some different expamples and then chose our favourite one. We recreated the pattern using paint or pastels, and added a silhouette of the animal.
Endangered Animals
We researched different endangered animals, looking at what it means for an animal to be endangered and what are the causes of animal endangerment. Once we found out why animals were endangered we then created posters about why animals are endangered to raise awareness.
Endangered Animal Models
We chose our favourite endangered animal. After looking at the picture carefully and exploring different adjectives to describe the animals we then used clay to create a model of then animal.
Planting with Mr Terry Walton
We were fortunate to recieve a visit from Mr Terry Walton. He taught us many facts about herbs and even let us taste them! He explained how to care for the herbs and how to care for them. We potted the herbs into bigger plant pots and were given a challenge to care for them and keep them alive. Diolch Mr Terry Walton!
Fonmon Castle
On June 24th we visited Fonmon Castle. We particpated in created a bug hotel, minibeast hunts and a dinosaur trail. We all had a fantastic time and even got to play in the park!
Wheels and Axles
We had great fun experimenting with wheels and axles. We found out how axles help the weeks to rotate and allow vehicles to move.
Designing a moving habitat
The Welsh Governement sent us a letter asking us to design a moving vehicle to transport animals from Chester Zoo to a new Zoo in Wales. We needed to consider:
How to make the habitat move
What habitat is needed for the animals?
How tall did the vehicle need to be?
We worked collaboratively with other peers and designed fantastic vehicles, taking into consideration the habitat that the animals needed.
Testing our vehicles and measuring the distance they traveled
We put our vehicles to the test and tested them out in the hall. We measured the distance that our vehicles traveled, recording our results in a table.
What have we learnt in this topic?
This term we learnt all about endangered animals and researched into the zoo debate. To end our topic we decided to make videos to discuss the new facts that we have learned throughout the topic.
