Is Plastic Fantastic?

Literacy

The Messy Magpie

To start our topic off we introduced this book, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. It sparked lots of questioning and discussion throughout.

The children looked at how to write a story plan to write a similar story. We discussed what makes a good story - the setting, characters, problems and resolutions and how to open and end a story.

Story Writing

We made the decision to write our own stories after reading The Messy Magpie. The children planned their stories and considered using alliteration in their titles. They created some wonderful stories with their plans. The children used their WMTG (What Makes This Good?) grid to ensure they included the required elements in their story writing.

A Plastic Bottle

We read this story and discussed the main parts of the story. The children told the story emphasising on sentence structure and discussed why plastic can be fantastic but also a problem. we we had some great class as well as partner debates on whether we should still use plastic.

Letter Writing

The children decided they wanted to write a letter to the council to suggest some ways to improve how we recycle.

We looked at features of a letter and what we need to include in a formal letter.

Our letters to RCT

They then wrote letters to Rhondda Cynon Taf council sharing their suggestions on how the council can improve recycling in our community.

Their suggestions included:

Numeracy

Data collection - We completed a walk around the perimeter of our school and gathered data about the rubbish we saw.  We used this data to create graphs using HWB.

We also sorted recyclable materials.

DCF

We went on a litter walk around the perimeter of our school and collected data. We put our findings into tally charts using the Hwb website.

Factual Posters

After researching facts about recycling, the children created their own factual posters on Adobe Express.
