AoLE Autumn
Health and Wellbeing/Science 2023 Year 5
This topic was started by simply reading the blurbs from two books - "Wonder" by RJ Palacio and "Glitter Boy" by Ian Eagleton. This led to a fantastic discussion about the perception of beauty, the body, our differences, religion, disabilities and bullying. As a year group we had another discussion about what our topic could be called and suggestions included -
What makes me, me?
Who are we?
Why can't we all be the same?
Why is everybody different?
We had a vote and the winner was "Why is everybody different?"
The pupils drew their inner and outer selves and discussed how we may look differently on the outside to how we feel or are, on the inside. Our personalities and our looks make us, us. These are things that make us different.
ORGANS IN THE BODY - 1
A very interesting afternoon was had when the pupils drew around a person in their group and then attempted to label all the body parts they knew! (see ORGANS IN THE BODY - 2 FOR HOW MUCH WE HAVE PROGRESSED!)
Next we attempted to assemble the bones in our body and watched this video...
BONES, BONES, BONES
As a year group we got together in groups to learn a song to help us remember the bones in the body. Check it out below!
Measuring accurately
We are learning to measure accurately and got into pairs to measure different parts of the body such as the circumference of our head, the length of our foot etc...
Presenting work using Seesaw.
Science Experiment - The spine
One of the functions of the skeleton is to provide support. In this science experiment, we had to find out how a structure can support a load effectively.
Resources
a tennis ball
ten sheets of A4 paper
a metre of sellotape
Our instructions
To design a construct a structure that will support the ball as high above the table as possible. The structure should be stable and may not be fixed to the table.
"For about the first ten minutes we really struggled! We all thought about laying the paper on the floor and kept the paper flat. We were really confused as to how this could support a tennis ball!" Sienna
"Mrs Putterill then reminded us of how the spine works and we thought that the structure would have to be vertical! We then had to think about how we could make the paper stronger but many of us forgot that it also had to support the tennis ball!" Aaron
TESTING
We then tested our structure and found that only 1 group built a structure that was strong enough to support the ball. Have a look at our videos below.
UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE BODY
We collaborated in our groups to present our work on different parts of the body.
NAME ART - DESCRIBE THE ACTIVITY - CUT AND PASTE FROM PLANNING - ADD IN PHOTOS
ADD IN THE ACTUAL GOOGLE CLASSROOM TASK WHERE THEY RESEARCHED THE ORIGINS OF THEIR NAMES.
What happens when we die? RVE:
We created Art work to show what happens when we die.
We took photos of this artwork and uploaded it to Slides and wrote a description of what our artwork meant to us.
As artists / creators, we shared our art with the class and discussed our views on what happens when we die?
ORGANS IN THE BODY - 2
We had a go again at placing organs and we had gained so much more knowledge! WOW! Such great progression.
Anti Smoking
Using Adobe Express on Hwb, we designed our own anti smoking posters.
The children worked in groups to discuss the statements and order them from strongly in favour of smoking/ strongly against smoking using a diamond nine.
INVICTUS GAMES
The Invictus Games is so inspiring and we had the opportunity to watch some of it in class. We were so inspired that we wanted to do more so we independently completed research and are very proud of our work.
GREEN SCREEN
We used Green Screen technology to locate our organs.
Pupil influence
As a year group we really wanted to see what our bodies looked like on the inside as we all knew we were so different on the outside.
Religions of the world
Through the use of pupil influence, we decided we wanted to find out about different religions of the world.
To prove we are Ethical Evans, we gathered evidence from a variety of books as well as the internet and in groups, we devised our own website and had some pupils in Year 6 to help us too!
Pride flag
Investigation - we first looked at the history of the Pride Flag and as a class we researched LGBTQ+. We were all surprised to learn that the colours of the Pride Flag were not simply the colours of the rainbow, but that each colour represented a word.
Creation - from our research we wanted to create our own pride flags and we are super happy at our finished results.
Design and Technology
To design and create a Worry Monster
We looked at a variety of soft toys and their uses to decide what type we would like to create as a year group. Our collective decision was to design and create a Worry Monster.
Here are some of our design ideas.
Our final designs
Making our Worry Monster.
For the majority of us, it was the first time using a sewing machine and we must say we had fun and would like the opportunity to do it again!
The finished Worry Monsters
Ellis had a special award from our Headteacher for taking so much care and attention to detail for his worry monster - bendegedig Ellis!
END OF TOPIC
For the end of the topic we were given the choice as to how to present our work on why we are so different. Some chose to do a double page spread in their topic books, whilst others did work on Jamboard or Google Slides.
Meadow and Jazmine's work was so good they received a special sticker from our Headteacher! What a fantastic achievement!
