Comparing Climate Data
We researched the climate data for Rhondda Cynon Taff and Trelew in Patagonia.
We used Google Sheets to record this data in a table and present the information in a climate graph.
Plan a trip to Patagonia
We were given a budget of £2800 to plan a trip to Patagonia. We used websites such as Booking.com and Sky Scanner to find the best flights and accommodations. We researched various excursions and day trips as well as traditional Patagonian dishes that we could try while on our trip.
We used a formula to keep a running total of how much we had spent and how much money we had remaining.
We used the live exchange rate function to convert between GBP and Argentine Pesos.
We learnt how to format cells into currency and date and also included a drop-down menu.
Displaying data manually
We also presented our information manually.
Dosbarth Efydd researched tourist areas in Patagonia. We looked for areas we would like to visit and showed our findings on a Double page Spread. As a class we decided we would like to visit Bariloche, Buenos Aires, Torres del Paine, Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas. These places provided a variety of activities and terraines, such as beaches and mountains and cities.
The next job was to work out the cost of a 24 day trip to Patagonia, taking into account plane flights, accommodation, food and visits and activities.
Each area was accounted for and then total costings were worked out.
We then created Budget Summaries, showing where the money was being spent.
We carried out an evaluation of the foods eaten in Wales and Patagonia. We investigated which foods were eaten in both areas of the world.
The foods included bara Brith, Cordero, Tortillas de Papas, Olives, Welsh cakes. The overall winner were the Patagonian sweet cakes.
Music
During our expressive arts lesson, we used a programme called Yu Studio to create our very own Hip Hop Track. click on the image below to listen to our tracks.
We learned and performed the song Patagonia as part of our Welsh Heritage Award assembly.
We compared the traditional music in Wales to the strong beat of the South American area, we were fascinated to see that music was shared by the Welsh settlers and the Patagonians.
We were interested to find out that the early versions of songs like La Bamba, which was popularised in Mexico, originated in Patagonia.
We performed both songs as part of Cwmlai's Welsh Heritage assembly.
We enjoyed contrasting the different sounds and became very interested that these two groups of people, with seemingly nothing in common, coming from opposite ends of the World managed to enjoy each other's cultures and live in harmony.
Art
As part of our St David's Day celebration, we researched and recreated the work of Welsh artist Jenny Lambert.
We noticed that this local artist used vibrant, contrasting colours and included her dog, Tinker, in each of her paintings. The paintings are all set in Wales and include seascapes as well as town settings.
Art in the style of Jenny Lambert.

We decided to work in contrasting mediums and locations as we worked in chalks and pastels on scenes the settlers would have met with as they approached Patagonia in The Mimosa in 1865.
We explored showing tints and shades of one colour. This one was with the colour blue
We drew pencil sketches of The Mimosa u, experimenting with shading
We attempted to show different terrains using psastels
We explored ways to show reflection using chalks
We became interested in the Welsh dragon and decided on a focus of Dragon's eyes. We initially drew an eye after looking at the human eye. Then we made a clay eye, using tools to sculpture.
We investigated shape..
.. and shading.
We carefully observed the shape of the eye from a tutorial.
We then focused on complimentary colours and finally observed the iris.
Shaping the clay
moulding and adding scales
Using tools to perfect
We experimented with patterns and tool markings
Patterned clay
Careful painting
We enjoyed showing our creativity through the medium of clay
We used colours which complimented the eyes

Map Work
We tested our measuring skills by using a scale to estimate the distances between various places in Patagonia.
We found out that Patagonia was a region, rather than a country, located at the Southern end of South America, spanning parts of Argentina and Chile.
We investigated using Google Earth and found out the distance in Km between Tonyrefail and Patagonia's largest city, Neuquen.
We labelled the countries of South America and placed Patagonia on the map and recorded the distance between home and Patagonia.
We then labelled the Continents of the World, the oceans and the Equator.

At the end of our topic, Pam y mae calon Cymru yn Mhatagonia?" we reflected on our class display, made a summary of the topic on Google Slides and wrote an end of topic evaluation.
We presented our topic creatively in the Welsh Heritage Assembly.
