Morfa Bay, Feb 2025
In March, we visited Morfa Bay for our TCS Cluster Residential trip. We had an action-packed three days which involved abseiling, rock climbing, bushcraft, archery, rock pooling, and more. We made lots of friends from the other cluster schools and are already looking forward to meeting up with them all again in year 7.
We learnt that working outside our comfort zone, in challenging weather conditions, in activities we didn't think we were capable of, made us grow in resilience and achieve great things.

EFL Kids Cup Regional Finals, March 2025 - Luton
Having won the Cardiff City football tournament in January, the year 6 footballers were invited to represent Cardiff City in the English Football League National finals day, which was held in Luton.
Before the finals day, the team visited the Cardiff City Stadium, where they were given a tour of the stadium and presented with their playing kits for the tournament.
During the finals day, the team competed against some tough opposition, and despite playing some wonderful football, they narrowly lost to Coventry in the quarter finals of the tournament.

World Book Day, 2025
We enjoyed dressing up as our favourite characters; prizes were given for the most original, homemade costumes.
We spent the afternoon reading to our reading buddies and sharing our love of reading with the younger children in the school.
Megan Mattravers, an author from Llantrisant came to visit and shared her published books with us. We got to meet her and ask her questions about anything. She gave us lots of ideas to write our own stories. Her two published books are called, Vintage Owl and The Elephant and the Buns. We were given the task to research key facts about her before she came.
We particularly enjoyed the reading of her book The Elephant and the Buns. This was particularly enjoyable as many knew the setting of the story. We were given the opportunity after the reading, to ask questions about being a writer. The talk was inspirational and the budding writers went home with new ambitions!
We enjoyed our World Book Day Assembly, with the whole school, where book prizes and certificates were given to the most original costumes
The children in the assembly guessed the book characters and certificates were presented by Mr Hughes
World Book Day was entered into by both the staff and pupils.
Cluster Eisteddfod Tonyrefail Community School
After meeting and making friends with children in the cluster schools, we were given the opportunity to meet them again at the cluster Eisteddfod.
Each school took part in the various competitions, including Welsh singing, Welsh folk dancing, recitals, art, and handwriting. We even managed to provide entertainment with singing and guitar playing. Cwmlai came away with a good pick of the medals!

Our final Eisteddfod in Cwmlai came round all too quickly! We threw ourselves into the competitions and worked very hard to complete them by the deadline, after a very busy term and returning from our Residential trip to Morfa Bay.
We had a great morning and witnessed talent in each year group.

Gold Cymraeg Campus Award
In the summer of 2022 Cwmlai achieved the Gold Cymraeg Campus Award. During the Spring Term, Tai and Hela, our Language Ambassador’s, represented Cwmlai in an award ceremony in the Vale Hotel to celebrate our success.
We work hard at Cwmlai to promote bilingualism. We believe that ‘Languages Connect Us!’.
Welsh Heritage Assembly
We were honoured to showcase the work and experiences we have in Cwmlai with our heritage and our roots. We took part in a whole school assembly which showed the Welsh topics we have been doing this term. We were visited by the head judge, David Maddox OBE.
We compared the traditional music in Wales to the strong beat of the South American area, we were fascinated to see that music was shared by the Welsh settlers and the Patagonians.
We were interested to find out that the early versions of songs like La Bamba, which was popularised in Mexico, originated in Patagonia.
We performed both songs as part of Cwmlai's Welsh Heritage assembly.
