Healthy Me
We talked about how we are all the same but also different. We have different colour hair, eyes, heights etc. We made a graph to show our hair colours.
Capacity
We have been learning about healthy eating and making sure we drink enough water. We have been exploring with capacity and talking about full, half full and empty.
Keeping Clean
We discussed all the ways we can keep clean, having a bath or shower, washing our hair and cleaning our teeth. The children wrote down what they did to keep themselves clean. Some children preferred showers and some baths.
Washing our Hands
We did an experiment to show why we need to wash our hands with soap. We were amazed to see the 'pepper' germs retract from the soap on our fingers!!
Sun Safety
We discussed protecting our body from the sun and why it is necessary to wear sun cream. We also looked at other ways of protecting our body and designed our own Sun Safety Posters.
Healthy Packed Lunch
Using the Eatwell Guide we were able to sort foods into the 5 different categories needed for a healthy, balanced diet. We used this guide to help plan a healthy packed lunch.
Keeping Safe and Looking after ourselves
We watched the NSPCC Video - PANTS. We discussed our 'private parts' and how we should keep them safe and remembered the words in the song 'What's in your pants belongs only to you' . We designed our very own pair of pants.
Recycling - looking at 3d shapes
We separated 2d and 3d shapes by sorting them into hoops.
We listened to the story Dear Earth. Tessa's grandpa tells her of his adventures around the world. Tessa uses her imagination to think of all the adventures she would love to have. She wants everyone to know how special our planet is. She believes that there is a chance to save the Earth if enough of us share the message.
We thought about the adventures we would love to have and then wrote our own letters.... Dear Earth,
We drew our own 'happy' Earth's on the whiteboard.
Recycling - Sorting Materials
We cut up pictures of recycling and glued them in to the correct column, according to the material they were made from - paper/card, plastic or food waste.
We learnt about different ways we could help our planet to survive. We made a list of these and drew posters to spread the word around our school.
We shared the story of 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley'. The story is about a plastic bag that floats through the sea and gets eaten by sea creatures. The children decided to make posters to encourage people to take their rubbish home and recycle more.
Following on from our floating and sinking experiments we decided to make our own boats out of recycled materials to see if they would float and not sink! Some added sails and flags and decorations to their boats.
One boat sank! We looked at its design and thought of reasons as to why this happened. We realised that the shape of the plastic bottle that was chosen for the boat was not buoyant and the boat turned over on to its side, filling with water and sank. We learned a big lesson from this!
