Non-chronological Report
Our genre this half term is 'Non-Chronological Reports'. We began by researching the differences between fiction and non-fiction.
Research
We found out what country the 7 Wonders of the Modern World were located in. We were very interested in the countries and decided that we would like to find out more information about them. We worked as partners to research the country, finding out the counties currency, weather, language etc.
Non-chronological Report
To present our research we wrote a non-chronological report. We ensured that we included subheadings, images and facts.
Glossary
While we were carrying out research we came across vocabulary that we did not understand, words that we did not know the meaning of. When we created our non chronological reports we thought it would be a great idea to create a glossary to go with it, just incase the readers did not know the meaning of the subtitles.
Instruction Writing
Our second genre this term is 'Instruction Writing'. We began by introducing imperative verbs.
Ordering Instructions and Time Connectives
We were given a set of instructions to order which explained how to make a jam sandwich. We ordered the instructions and was then given the challenge to ass time connectives to the instructions.
How to Make Toast
We were really lucky Mrs Scobie and Miss Horrigan thought that we deserved a little treat. They bought us bread and butter and we learned how to make toast. Afterwards, we wrote instructions on how to make toast and ensured that we included imperative verbs, time connectives and pictures.
Capacity - Potion making!
We followed the instructions to make magical potions that would make our toys! We had to be very careful when measuring out the mixture and following the ingredients list to make sure nothing went wrong. We needed to use our knowledge of measuring in ml and reading the scale accurately. We just had to remember to use the magic word a the end - Abracadabra!
We created our own potions to make smelly pots outside. First we listed the ingredients we needed, and how much of each. We then went outside and followed our instructions to make the potions!
Magic Potions
The wizard needed our help! He had lost his magic wand and was running out of magic potions. He set us a challenge to create a magic potion and write the instructions to go with it. We went down to the nature area and used natural materials to create our potions. We wrote up the instructions for the wizard to include in his magic book.
Weighing
We explored mass by weighing different items. We began by comparing items and estimating which would be heaviest. We had to use the correct language - heavier than / heaviest, lighter than / lightest, equal to. We were surprised by some of the results!
Ble wyt ti'n byw?
Our question this term was 'Ble wyt ti'n byw?' We began by practising the sentence pattern 'Dw i'n byw yn _____' to describe where we lived. We challenged ourselves to use 'gyda' to extend our sentences.
We then moved onto describing where someone else lived using the sentence pattern 'Mae _______ yn byw yn ________.
Y Bws Bach
This term we learnt the poem 'Y Bws Bach'. We held auditions and Harlan and Elin were chosen to represent Year 2, Violet to represent Year 1, and Cwmlai in the Urdd Eisteddfod Cylch (district). Harlan gained first place and will now go on to represent Cwmlai in the Regional Eisteddfod.
Online Safety
We recognised that staying safe online is highly important. We found out the following:
The information I put online leave a digital footprint.
Using key words in an online search helps you to find the information your looking for.
We identified that some websites are not appropriate for children - always check the age.
Always be kind online.
Never share personal information online. We created our own avatars.
My Mum
Together we read the story 'My Mum' by Anthony Browne. We identified the similes in the story and decided to create our own similes about our own Mums. Next we used the similes to create our own poem titled 'My Mum'. We included the poems in our Mother Day Cards. While designing our cards we thought that our hearts should be symmetrical. Mrs Scobie taught us how to fold paper in half, draw half the shape and then when we cut it out it was symmetrical! We hope our Mums love them!
Have you visited any of the 7 Wonders of the World?
We were curious to find out if any of the teachers had visited any of the 7 Wonders of the World. We interviewed all of the staff in school and made a tally chart showing how many people had visited each wonder. We then used that information to create a bar chart to show us the results.
What is your favourite toy?
We have been looking at collecting and presenting data. As part of our investigation into toys we asked our friends what their favourite toy is and created a bar chart showing the answers. We also linked this with our Welsh topic 'Beth wyt ti eisiau?' and learnt the names for different toys in Welsh.
Mickey Mouse
We looked at one of the most famous characters of all times, one that has inspired many different toys and games - Mickey Mouse. We looked at how the character has changed since it was first introduced in 1928, and created a timeline of how he has changed over the years.
Toys across the decades
How are toys similar or different from 70 years ago to now? We sorted toys into the different decades that they were made. We thought it was funny to see some of the old toys and how they are the same or different to our toys now. Some of the toys that were popular years ago are popular again now!
Toys old or new?
After our toy workshop in St Fagans where we explored toys from over the years, we sorted out toys into a venn diagram showing old, new or both. There was lots of discussion about each toy - what was it made of, how did it work, would we like to play with it?
