Who Put the Colours in the Rainbow?
We began our topic by listening to the song 'Who Put the Colours in the Rainbow?' After listening to the song, we thought about the questions that came into our minds. We wanted to know... Who put the colours in the rainbow? Where does light come from? How is light made? What is electricity? How does electricity work? We hope to explore these ideas with our friends and find out more.
The Colour Monster
We read the story of the Colour Monster and identified how each monster felt. We talked about our feelings and how different things can affect our emotions. We shared what made us feel a certain way. We then picked our strongest and favourite emotion and created our own colour monster.
Creating emotion faces
We explored the nature area to find natural materials that we could use to create emotions. We used leaves, twigs and stones and worked in partners to create various emotions.
How are Rainbows formed?
We explored how rainbows are formed. First, sunlight shines through the raindrop. The light bends and splits into colours such as red, blue and green. We drew diagrams to explain this. Lastly, we recorded our explanations on Seesaw. We tried hard to include the new scientific vocabulary that we learnt such as white light and prisms. It was exciting to learn together!
Northern Lights
The Northern Lights were lighting up our sky, we were lucky enough to see photographs of the Aurora in Wales. We researched what the Aurora was and found out they are an interaction of the solar wind and the Earth's magnetic field.
We used chalk and paint to create artwork of the Northern Lights.
Painting with Natural Materials
We identified the colours of the Rainbow and explored the Nature Area to find natural colours. We decided to use the natural materials to make paint.
Sources of Light
We walked around the school looking for sources of light. We talked about if a light source is artificial or natural and sorted light sources into the right group.
Electricity
The lights in the classroom would not work! The computer would not work! What was wrong? They had been turned off at the plug. There was no electricity to make them work. The children talked about electricity and what uses electricity in our homes and schools. They went for a walk to identify items that use electricity in our school.
We sorted items that use electricity and items that do not use electricity.
We explored circuits and worked together to create a circuit. We had 2 wires, a bulb and a battery and had to work out how to make the light bulb come on. Once we had done this we had a further challenge to add a light switch to our circuit.
Shadows
We found out how shadows are made and, as a home learning task, we created animal shadows for our friends to guess the names of the animals we made.
Diwali
We discovered that Diwali is a festival of light! We learned about the Hindu celebration by reading the story of Rama and Sita and exploring how people celebrate. We also made beautiful Rangoli patterns and enjoyed crafting our own Diya lamps from clay. It was such a fun experience!
Comparing Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas
We are fortunate to have children in our classroom that celebrate Diwali they helped us learn more about the festival. Mankeerat's Mum visited us to help us learn more about Diwali, she informed us that Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Diva which is similar to Diwali and is a festival of light. Later that week, we identified similarities and differences by created a Venn Diagram.
Guy Fawkes and the GunPowder Plot
This Bonfire Night, we explored who Guy Fawkes is and why we celebrate. We listened to the story of the Gunpowder Plot and created storyboards in pairs to share it. We even teamed up with Year 3 to teach them all about the exciting history behind the fireworks!
Eid-Ul-Fitr
We investigated Eid-ul-Fitr and found out that it a festival of lights celebrated by Muslims. Kayinat and Mena taught us about the festival and explained how it is celebrated in her family. We found out all about Ramadan! Kayinat explained that her family visit a Mosque as their place of worship, which lead us to investigate what a Mosque looks like. We had great fun building a Mosque out of blocks and creating collages of a Mosque.
We made cards to celebrate Eid-Ul-Fitr ensuring that we included the cresent moon and stars as we recognised their signifance to the Muslim faith.
Hanukkah
We found out that Hanukkah is a festival of light celebrated by the Jewish faith. We researched the festival to find out more information about it. We listened to the story of Hanukkah and worked in partners to sequence the story.
What have we found out during this topic?
We reflected on what we found out throughout our topic, what we enjoyed the most and what we would like to find out more about. We self evaluated the topic by drawing symbols to represent what we had learned. We discussed our self evaluations with a partner, describing the key facts that we had found out.
