Who Put the Colours in the Rainbow?
We were lucky to have a visit from Mary the Fairy at Clever Cubs! She took us on a magical journey filled with music and stories about our feelings. Mary showed us how to understand and manage our emotions using drama, sensory props and even dance! The lights twinkled, and the instruments played while we learned helpful tips to feel our best. Everyone found the story exciting, engaging and so much fun! We loved every moment and felt inspired to express our feelings better. Thank you, Mary the Fairy, for an unforgettable experience.
Describing Mary the Fairy
In order to enhance our sentences we found out that we needed powerful adjectives to add description to our writing. We used a thesaurus to identify adjectives that we could use to describe Mary the Fairy. We used the adjectives to write simile sentences describing her. Finally we wrote a description of Mary.
Setting the Scene
We discussed the importance of using our senses when we are writing descriptions. We described a setting by imaging what we could see and hear. We used a thesaurus to find powerful adjectives to add to our description.
Sentence Starters
We realised we needed to master quality sentence starters to make our writing more impactful. We had a blast creating sentences to describe the picture, ensuring we included a mix of sentence starters and adjectives. Plus, we were diligent about using capital letters and full stops. It was a fun learning experience!
Story Writing
Mary the Fairy needed a new chapter in her story. We were set the challenge to write a new adventure for Mary the Fairy. We needed to include powerful adjetcives, capital letters, full stops and sentence starters. We even challenged ourselves to include similie sentences. We reflected on our work by editing our stories.
Making Predictions
We explored the front cover of 'The Day the Crayons Quit' by Drew Daywalt. We identified the author and illustrator (Oliver Jeffers), then shared what we noticed to predict the story line. Everyone tried hard to back up their predictions with reasons!
Commas in Lists
We were given shopping lists to write comma sentences. We found out that a comma divides up every item on the list, apart from the final item, which is separated with the word 'and'.
Letter Writing
We looked at different examples of letters and talked about the features of an informal letter. In groups we identified and labelled the parts of a letter.
Letters to Santa
Santa rang Mrs Scobie and informed her that he had not received a letter from Dosbarth Melyn this year! We decided to write a letter to Santa to find out how he was doing and inform himof our wish lists this year. We reflected on our letters and self assesed them against the WMTG and edited to improve our writing.
Christmas Poem
At Christmas we made cards to send home to our family to wish them a Merry Christmas. When we explored cards we found that they tend to have a short poem inside them. We decided to write a Christmas poem to include in our cards. We used adjectives to describe Christmas symbols and included them in our poem.
Welsh
This term, we focused on the sentence pattern 'Sut mae'r tywydd heddiw?'. We started by learning weather vocabulary, then crafted sentences using 'Mae hi'n…' and expanded with 'Dydy hi ddim yn…'. To finish, we had a blast role-playing as weather presenters, showcasing our newfound skills!
French Numbers
We had so much fun learning numbers from 1 to 10 in French! We practiced saying each number aloud, and then we recorded our voices on Seesaw. It was exciting to hear ourselves speaking in a different language! We also participated in European Language Day, where we shared what we were learning with our friends. Everyone enjoyed the games and activities that celebrated languages from all over Europe. It was a great way to understand and appreciate different cultures. Learning new words is always exciting, and we look forward to using what we learned in the future!
Guy Fawkes
After learning about the Gunpowder Plot, we had fun drawing portraits of Guy Fawkes. We tried to ensure that his face was symmetrical, using our knowledge of reflective symmetry. We got into character, imagining ourselves as him while creating speeches to share his experience. It was essential to focus on our tone of voice and expression, all while using the past tense to tell his story. We used Chatterpix to record our speech.
2D and 3D Shape
We explored 2D and 3D shapes in practical activities. We applied what we had find out into different shape pictures and activities around the classroom.
We had a number of different 3D shape challenges:
use cocktail sticks and blue tack to make 3D shapes. It took a lot of time and patience but we were so happy when we did it! Along the way we had to check we had the right number of edges, faces and corners.
3D shape sorting - we sorted shapes in a number of different ways. Do they roll? By how many faces / edges / corners.
following picture cards to build out of 3D shapes.
matching pictures of real life objects to the correct 3D shape.
Rangoli Patterns
We used 2D shapes to create Rangoli patterns as part of our learning about Diwali celebrations.
