Word Book Day 2025
We loved dressing up as our favourite characters; prizes were given for the most original, home made costumes.
We enjoyed reading to our reading buddies and sharing our love of reading with the younger pupils.
Megan Mattravers, an author from LLantrisant came to visit and shared her published books with us. We got to meet her and ask her questions about anything. She gave us lots of ideas to write our own stories. Her two published books are called, Vintage Owl and The Elephant and the Buns. We were given the task to research key facts about her before she came. We were allowed to choose how to present our work using different programmes and we could collaborate with each other. We found this really interesting!

Shine came in to work with the children on collaboration and understanding the feelings of others. The workshop was hugely successful and the children were able to explore what friendship was and what made a good friend. They looked at a situation from inside out when one of the characters, BingBong, was feeling sad. Sadness was able to put herself in his shoes and understand how he felt. Having empathy for our friends and their feelings . The children role played different scenarios and imagined how their friends would be feeling in these situations. They were encouraged to reflect on their behaviours and think of different ways they could be a good friend to others.

We went to the Royal Mint to explore their museum and ask questions about their ambition to be NET ZERO by 2030. Currently operating at 70% with their giant wind turbines, Bryn and Delilah, and solar panel farm. We also wanted to visit there as we entered their short story competition about sustainable futures. Whilst at The Royal Mint we learned all about sustainability and had a tour of the plant. We also became detectives and worked out which coins were fake and forgeries using a variety of numerical skills.
Cwmlai year 4 pupils reached the semi finals and narrowly missed out to a place in the final by 1 try awarded in extra time. A talented team who were watched in action by U20s prop forward, Sam Scott! He said. "they are stars of the future!"
As part of our swimming lessons this term, we have also learned how to save someone from water if they fall in.
We would like to thank Mrs John and the Community Champions for organising such a fabulous afternoon.
We had a wonderful time at our book swap and we can't wait to read our new books!
What a day! Global Goals for Wales. We must protect our heritage and secure it for future generations. By working together we can achieve theses 17 goals. We loved performing our song in front of the school, 'The Time is Now', everyone, including our governors, staff, pupils and the Welsh Heritage Judge, enjoyed our performance thoroughly.
