Our hook for this topic was placing a world map on each table and posing the question, "Where in the world?" The children loved sharing where they had been, excitedly exploring the map to locate different countries. Their enthusiasm was infectious as they pointed out places they recognised and those they were curious about.
Following this, the children generated a list of questions they would like to ask during our studies. They paired up to discuss these queries, sparking lively conversations and encouraging them to delve deeper into the topic. It was fantastic to see their engagement and the way they embraced the learning opportunity, making connections with the world around them.
The children had a fantastic time using the Chromebooks to explore the National Geographic Kids website! They loved researching different countries from around the globe, diving into exciting facts. They particularly enjoyed looking at the flags, learning about the capitals, and discovering the population sizes. It was amazing to see their curiosity spark as they found out something new about each nation. It turned into a fun and educational experience for everyone, and they can't wait to do it again!
We researched the continents and even learnt a catchy new song to help us remember them! The children really enjoyed working in pairs, sharing ideas and discovering fun facts together. After that, we explored different fruits and figured out which continents they come from. It was great to see them so engaged and curious about the world.
The children have loved learning different dances with Mrs Priday....here are some of their performances.
We have been learning about Australia....today we worked in teams to research an Australian food. After, we made a video to share our favourite Australian foods.
We visited The Chocolate House at The Rhondda Heritage Park for a chocolate workshop...it was amazing!
The children then worked collaboratively to provide feedback from our trip.
We've been having a great time looking at imperative verbs in our sizzle lessons, which has provided a fantastic opportunity to incorporate recipes from around the world. The children have got really creative, crafting dishes from various countries for our class recipe book.
Following on from our topic of looking at food around the world, we are now focusing on food from Wales. The children have enjoyed researching where our food comes from and what traditional dishes originate from our beautiful country. For example, we discovered that Welsh cakes and Glamorgan sausages are popular treats. We also learned about the famous Welsh rarebit, a delicious cheese dish that many people love. All this research helps us understand how our local foods connect to our culture and identity.
We became creative cariads by making our own Welsh chocolate. Our teachers brought chocolate from the Chocolate House, and we melted it and poured it into heart moulds. When they were ready, we put them in bags to give to our mums on Mother's Day.
We were lucky enough to have a visit from Fablas Ice Cream. Lauren the director of the company explained how the company started and how it has expanded to owning 4 parlours and some ice cream vans. She explained that the milk and cream they use comes from a dairy farm that is less than 20 miles away. She explained why it was important to her to use Welsh products. She gave each child an ice cream which they loved.
One of our teachers has bee hives on her farm. We saw pictures of the hives and videos of the bee's working. We learnt how the honey is collected from the hives and extracted and put into jars. This honey is made less than 10 miles from our school. We tasted the honey and even tried it on toast.
In class, we made colourful logos featuring a Welsh symbol. Each logo included a Welsh word, like "cymraeg," which means Welsh. We used bright colours to show our pride in Wales and celebrate our heritage together!
