A Welsh knight from Cardiff Castle visited the children to introduce our theme. Due to his inexperience and lack of knowledge of castles, the knight was in a great deal of worry. He asked of the children if they might get him some information.
They all agreed, and we talked about what we wanted to learn.
The children wrote down what they wanted to learn about this topic and how they planned to do it. They also suggested that we visit a castle, so we planned a school trip for the pupils to Cardiff Castle.
The children researched the many parts of a castle before labelling them on a diagram of a castle. They next built their own castles, making sure to include every detail they had previously learned.
The children worked in group to create a rhyming poem about what they have learnt over the past term. We looked at rhyming words and then they worked in a group to create a poem that rhymes.
The challenge in our construction area was to build a castle and then measure it using the blocks. Before measuring with a friend, the kids made an estimation of the size of their castle.
The children used a variety of recycled materials they had bought in from home to make a castle. They worked well as a team, and were able to label the parts of their castle from previous learning.
