To introduce our new topic, we read the book Lost and Found and used it as a starting point to explore the South Pole. We compared life in the South Pole to life in Wales, noticing the many differences in landscape, climate, and wildlife. We discovered which animals live in the icy conditions of the South Pole and how they survive in such extreme weather. This led us to explore the seasons, focusing particularly on winter, and learning about the different animals that hibernate during the colder months.
We retold the story of Lost and Found by sequencing the story cards. We also used an emotions scale to explore how the characters were feeling at different points in the story.
Exploring Numbers
Penguin is having trouble recognising numbers, so he gave us a special mission to help him. We used pebbles to form numbers and carefully counted out the correct number of blocks to match.
Oh no! Penguin has discovered some bigger numbers and now he needs help to partition them. Can we work together to solve the challenge?
Addition Challenge
We discovered a surprise challenge in the tuff tray – it was time to practise our addition skills! Penny the Penguin needed our help, so we searched for manipulatives to help us solve the problems and find the correct answers.
We explored both standard and non-standard methods of measuring and had fun estimating to see who could guess the closest. But then Tiny discovered a problem, the blocks we were using were all different sizes! This led us to investigate more accurate ways to measure, and we began using rulers to measure everyday objects.
A Special Mission from Penny the Penguin
Today, we received an exciting letter from our friend Penny the Penguin! She was on her way to the bank when—oh no!—she accidentally dropped all of her coins. They scattered everywhere, and Penny didn’t know how to sort them out. She asked us for help, and of course, we were ready for the challenge!
We got to work straight away, carefully examining the different coins. We looked at their shapes, sizes, colours, and numbers to help us identify each one. Some of us grouped the coins by type—1p, 2p, 5p, 10p—while others organised them by value or size. We used our counting and sorting skills to make sure every coin was in the right place.
Practising with Money – Getting Ready for Our Toy Shop
Before opening our very own toy shop in the role play area, we spent time learning how to use real money just like in real life! We explored different coins, learning their values and how to add them together to pay for toys.
We took turns being shopkeepers and customers, choosing toys to "buy" and working out how much money we needed. Some of the prices were tricky, so we had to use our addition skills to count up the right amount. We even practised giving change, using number lines and counting backwards to help us work it out.
As part of our group work, we used Google to research fascinating facts about animals that hibernate. Working together, we explored a variety of creatures—from hedgehogs and bats to frogs and dormice. We found out what they like to eat before hibernation to build up their energy, the different habitats they live in, and the safe, quiet places they choose to hibernate during the colder months. Each group shared their findings with the class, helping us all learn even more. It was a fantastic opportunity to build our teamwork, communication, and research skills while deepening our understanding of how animals adapt to seasonal changes.
Building on our group research, we then worked independently to discover even more about our chosen animal. Using the information we gathered in a group and conduction our own researcgh we each created our own fact file, showcasing key details such as diet, habitats and interesting facts.
We explored what it means to be online and how we can stay safe while using the internet. We talked about the different devices that connect us to the online world, such as iPads, phones, and games consoles. Together, we discussed important ways to stay safe online and what to do if something makes us feel uncomfortable. To share what we learned, we each created our own online safety posters with important tips and messages.
During our literacy lessons, we explored what a list is and when it's useful to use one. We practised creating our own lists for a variety of different purposes. We wrote a list of items we would pack for a trip to the South Pole, a shopping list of things we might need to buy from the shop, and even a birthday wish list filled with things we’d love to receive.
We used the JIT programme on HWB to re write our instructions to send to other classes so they can build our toys from the past.
We headed out to our nature area to search for signs of spring. We took note of all the wonderful signs that spring had arrived. Working in pairs, we used our observations to create simile sentences, comparing what we saw to other things using "like" or "as." It was a lovely way to combine outdoor learning with creative writing.
We used the pattern and line techniques we had been learning in art to design beautiful Mother’s Day cards. Inside, we planned and created thoughtful acrostic poems to celebrate our mums or other special people in our lives.
