Our first community group was a meeting full of ideas! The children were really excited and elected their chairman, secretary, and treasurer. Once everyone was settled, we began discussing what it would mean to be Community Champions. "How can we help people in our community?"
In small groups, the children shared their thoughts and worked together to come up with some fantastic ideas. They suggested ways we could support local families, the homeless, tidy up our parks, and even help animals in need. After listening to everyone's ideas, we selected a few that we thought would be our focus for this year.
We also took time to create a Cwmlai Champions logo. The children drew their designs and then we voted on which one we would like to use. Everyone voiced their choice, and in the end, we had a winner!
We've had a really busy morning coming up with three great ideas for our Community Champions initiative. Our first idea is to put together care packages and Christmas cards for people in hospital over the festive season. We think this will bring a smile to those who need it most during the holidays.
Next up, we’re excited about launching a Book Bonanza in the spring term. This will help us raise some funds to get new reading materials for our school, which will be fantastic for encouraging a love of books among all our students.
Finally, we want to set up a Cwmlai Community Cwtch. This will be a place where people in the community can help themselves to food and toiletries if they need a bit of support. The children had a lot of fun making posters to share these ideas and chatting about how our plans can really make a difference in our community.
Care Packages for Royal Glamorgan Hospital
The children asked their parents for donations to create some care packages for the folks at Royal Glamorgan Hospital. They then put the packages together, carefully selecting what to include in each bag. We then went to the hospital to give these packages out, which put a smile on everyone’s faces. One of the patients' daughters even wrote a lovely email to say thank you! It was truly heart warming to see the difference we made.
Third Meeting - 12 February 2025
In this meeting, we focused on our Book Bonanza. The children created fantastic posters for Dojo and the event, showcasing a mix of stories, non-fiction, and chapter books. We had a great discussion about how we could use the donations and what types of books they'd love to have for our school. With a bit of luck, we’ll have a book for everyone to enjoy!
Today, we had a busy meeting! The children made sure they had their posters ready for the Book Bonanza. They grouped the books into three categories: younger children’s books, chapter books, and non-fiction books. Half of the group also created posters for Mothers Matters, as they are doing a 5k walk to raise awareness. They designed some fantastic good luck posters.
