Old Fashioned Creamed Cabbage

Ingredients

2 tablespoons bacon drippings

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, chopped

8 cups cabbage,chopped

3 cups chicken broth

8 tablespoons butter,Split

1/2 cup all purpose flour

1 cup half and half

2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon pepper

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

20 Ritz Crackers, crushed

Directions

In a heavy dutch oven, saute onion and garlic in the bacon drippings.

Pour the chopped cabbage in the onions and garlic and mix well.

Pour the chicken broth on top of the cabbage stir and place the lid on the dutch oven.

Cook on medium heat for 8 minutes.

While the cabbage is cooking, pour the flour,salt, pepper, and nutmeg into a mixing jar, then pour in the half and half. Place the lid on the mixing jar and shake the contains until completely smooth.

Place the butter pads on top of the cabbage and stir until melted.

Bring the temperature of the cabbage up to medium high and then pour in the flour and milk mixture, stirring constantly.

As you continue to stir the mixture will thicken.

Turn the heat off and continue to stir.

Remove from heated burner and pour the mixture into a baking dish.

Sprinkle the crushed crackers over the top of the mixture.

Place in a 425 degree oven for 10 minutes, just to brown the crackers.

Remove the baking dish and it is ready to serve.
