Calendar of the Saffery/Whitaker Papers, Acc. 126,

Angus Library, Boxes 1 and 2.

The letters in these two boxes have been separated by writer and recipient; some portions have been organized chronologically, but others remain unsorted by date. I have placed them in groups of 10 letters per plastic sleeve, unless otherwise noted, inside folders that are marked according to the calendar below. Included in these two boxes are 579 letters to and from the children of MGS.

One letter, dated 19 August 1834, is 8 folio pages long, in a very small hand; another one, dated 19 June 1837, from St. Helena, is 10 folio pages, plus a PS; another one, dated 23 March 1840, from Graham’s Town, South Africa, is 12 folio pages long. He seemed to be visiting missionary places, but whether he was ever a missionary himself is unclear.]

B. A commonplace book belonging to Ann Salter.

Dated on front inside page November 1808, Salisbury. Includes ‘The Lay of the Last Minstrel,’ by Scott; ‘The Hall of Justice’ (both parts); ‘Vagrant,’ by Crabbe; ‘The Recollections of this day’s Journey, January 15th 1797,’ ‘Lines,’ and ‘Musings after visiting the Convent of Arrabidas,’ and three more ‘Lines,’ all by Southey.
