Sally Soapbubble and Her Silver Fish, 1940. In the public domain from failure to renew copyright. (HathiTrust)

Sally blows a huge soap bubble that rolls to the river, where she meets the Silver Fish who offers to pull her inside it. (“… Sally fastened the boat to the Silver Fish with cobwebs, and stepped through the side of the soapbubble without breaking it.”) The two have adventures not only along the river but underwater and in the sky. They encounter fairies who rescue Sally after she is kidnaped (ch. 1), the “river babies” Zim, Zit and Zill in the cave of Grandpa Lollup (ch. 2), “rain fairies” and “cloud fairies” up in the sky, where they all hide from the angry Thunder King (ch. 3), living musical notes in the Land of Music (ch. 4), the Frost Elves and their leader, who are in the treetops painting leaves autumnal colors, and therefrom flying to the Aurora Borealis to fetch paint for them (ch. 5), and finally the Sandman, along with the children of the world, in Dreamland (ch. 6).
