The article as currently written indicates Christopher Marlowe’s play as being the character’s first appearance, but the Faust character is older than that, originating in German folklore. The character’s name was changed from Faust to Faustus (or Fauſtus) for the earliest English‐language appearances, but thanks to Goethe’s play, the character is still better known in English as Faust, so the article’s name should probably be changed to “Faust.” See the Wikipedia article.
