Terry Andrews
Article by Alan Trout
Terrence David Andrews rode over jumps for several seasons during the mid-1970s and early 80s, ending with six winners.
His first ride was on Tudormead, finishing tailed off in the Valley Gardens Opportunity Handicap Hurdle at Ascot on October 27, 1976. He opened his account two months later at Ludlow when the five-year-old Regal Bird, trained by Rodney Bower at Pontesbury, near Shrewsbury, challenged Kellater at the last flight of the Amontillado Selling Handicap Hurdle and ran on to win by four lengths.
Seventeen days later the partnership struck again when landing the Roadman’s Selling Handicap Hurdle at Taunton, taking the lead at halfway and holding the challenge of Allen Webb on Carlquset by a length and a half.
It was more than a year before he scored again, but at Sandown on February 3, 1978 the eight-year-old Quickapenny gave Terry his third success in the Wavenden Opportunity Handicap Hurdle, having taken the lead approaching the last flight. Quickapenny was owned and trained by the redoubtable Edward Courage, who also supplied Terry with his fourth success when Vatican Express proved too good for six opponents in taking the Keswick Opportunity Handicap Chase at Wetherby on March 1.
Despite those two wins, Terry did not make much further progress, and it was not until Boxing Day 1980 that he won again. Remarkably, his mount was again Vatican Express, taking full advantage when the leader Cairn Royal unseated his rider to land the Port Holme Handicap Chase at Huntingdon by two and a half lengths.
At the same course on Easter Monday, April 20, 1981, the pair combined to give Terry his final win in the Fitzwilliam Handicap Chase by a distance, two of his three rivals having pulled up.
Terry had his final ride at Nottingham on May 10, 1983, when Daraheen Sniper pulled up in the Bottesford Novices’ Handicap Hurdle.
