Tony Andrews

Anthony Mark Andrews, a great swimmer and avid reader, was born on July 13, 1951.

Tudor Dance, trained by Bob Turnell, was his first winner and came in a three-horse race, the Easter Hero Steeplechase, at Kempton on 28 January 1972.

That year he rode a further five winners.

His last mount as a rider came on April 7, 1977 when he rode Lovejoy at Southwell.

Having ridden about 50 winners, he spent spells as assistant trainer to Rodney Bower and as head lad to John Thorne before switching to training and, from his Taunton stable, sent out his first runner, Wistanwick, on 9 February 1978.

In May 1984, Andrews was banned from holding a trainer's licence for two years. This followed a Jockey Club inquiry investigating the ownership of Royal Casino. Andrews admitted making entries for the gelding under his own name when the horse was owned by David Stobbs, and also admitted wilfully entering the horse, knowing or believing it was not qualified, and deliberately misleading the stewards.

He was warned off for two years until August 1986.

His stable, Ash Priors, closed down.

He did not ride or train again.
