George Christie

(1911 -1991)

George Alexander Christie was retained by Epsom trainer Gerald Hardy, whose stables stood in Windmill Lane.

He had his first two mounts in public at Northolt Park under Pony Turf Club rules on Saturday March 27, 1937. He finished second on the first, a horse called Moneyspinner, and then won on the second, Jade Lady, trained by William Smyth at Epsom, the first winner of his career.

George rode his second winner, again at Northolt Park, on 7/4 favourite Scott's Fancy three days later and went on to win a further six PTC races at Northolt during that year.

He subsequently rode on the Flat under Jockey Club rules. On Saturday, 5 April, 1947, Kempton Park re-opened for racing, having become the property of the War Office for the previous seven years. That afternoon, George Christie rode Feudal Law in the last race, but ran unplaced.

George rode again two months later, aboard Craig Steel in a selling plate at Epsom on June 6 before, struggling for rides, he relinquished his licence.

He subsequently renewed his licence and rode from 1952 to 1957. He had just one winner during that time, Radiant Glow in the Clearwell Two-Year-Old Stakes at Newmarket on October 16, 1956, for Epsom trainer Walter Nightingall. He had 40 mounts that year, finishing second five times and third six times in addition to his one winner.
