Simon Chamberlayne

Amateur rider Simon John Chamberlayne was born on July 9, 1940. He operated on the Flat rather than over jumps, riding his first winner on Markless, trained by Arthur Budgett, in the Welland Amateur Riders’ Plate at Worcester on September 26, 1959.

He rode two winners and a third from just three rides the following year. Both wins were again achieved on Markless in amateur riders' contests at Worcester. Markless also gave him his fourth and final success of his career when winning an amateur riders’ race at Birmingham on April 24, 1961, beating My Own, the mount of John Lawrence, by three lengths.

Away from racing, Simon, who lived in Chipping Norton, in Oxfordshire, enjoyed the traditional countryman's pursuits of hunting and shooting.

Simon Chamberlayne and Markless beat John Lawrence on My Own

in the Rugby Amateur Ruiders' Stakes at Birmingham on April 24, 1961.
