The son of a trainer, Henry Arthur Jnr was born in Staffordshire in 1789. He was a leading jockey during the early years of the 19th century. He won many good races including the Knutsford Cup twice, on Prince of Orange in the inaugural running in 1815 and Arg-ntes in 1817.
He later trained at Hednesford and was said to have been both kind and honest. He died at Cannock on August 31, 1844, aged 55, and was buried in St Luke’s, Cannock.
Two of his sons, Henry Bailey (1819-1840) and William Arthur (1826-1885) also became jockeys.
