On Thursday, June 23, 1863, just before the start of a race at Stockbridge, sixteen-year-old Fred Clarke apprentice from Danebury was severely injured when his horse, Lord Ronald, fell and rolled on him. He was immediately rushed to John Day's house where he lay in a precarious state with little hope being entertained for his recovery.
Young Fred died the following day.
