Frederick William Candlin was not in action for long during the 1916 Flat season but did manage to win on his first ride in public.
He was apprenticed to Basil Jarvis (1887-1957) who trained at Green Lodge, Newmarket and made the perfect start to his career when riding the 100-8 shot Eunice to a head victory in the Maiden (Apprentice) Three-Year-Old Plate at Newmarket on July 19, 1916.
He only rode twice more, his final outing being on October 31, again at Newmarket, when St Aour finished down the field in the Old Nursery Stakes won by Steve Donoghue on Smile.
Basil Jarvis went on to train hundreds of winners, including the 1923 Derby winner Papyrus, but Frederick Candlin had to be content with just his one victory.
Frederick's only win: Eunice, 19 July 1916, Newmarket
